What I Believe About Engineering Systems

My son is named Atom after Pink Floyd's Atom Heart Mother. I have used “atomheartmutha” online for years, long before I had the language to describe what it also represents in my work: atomic energy, human heart, and the particular combination of comfort and authority that comes from being a mother.

As I have moved through emergency management, public technology, software, cloud infrastructure, platform engineering, and technical leadership, those three forces have shaped what I believe about engineering systems.

01 / Atomic energy

Small things can produce enormous consequences.

A poorly defined requirement, an ignored dependency, or a decision nobody documents can destabilize an entire program. But the opposite is also true. A clearer interface, a safer deployment path, or one honest conversation can change the trajectory of a team.

Good technical leadership means respecting these reactions before they become incidents. It means paying attention to the forces moving beneath the visible work and knowing when a small intervention can release energy instead of consuming it.

02 / Human heart

Engineering systems are human systems.

Infrastructure is the collection of things that keep people from breaking when life inevitably does. Reliability protects more than uptime. Developer experience protects attention. Observability protects people from having to guess in the dark.

Responsible AI protects human judgment and dignity. Data sovereignty protects the ability of communities and organizations to control their own futures. These are technical concerns, but they are also expressions of care.

03 / The Mother part

Comfort and authority are not opposites.

Sometimes leadership is reassurance: I see the problem, you are not alone, and we will figure it out. Sometimes it is a quiet but unmistakable boundary: no, we are not shipping that risk downstream and asking someone else to absorb it.

Strong engineering organizations need both. They need leaders who can create safety without avoiding accountability, hold complexity without spreading panic, and tell the truth without turning every difficult moment into a performance of toughness.

So, what does that mean?

Generate power.
Protect people.
Build trust.

Engineering systems should generate power without treating people as fuel. They should be built with enough heart to serve the humans who depend on them and led with enough care and authority to remain trustworthy under pressure.

My work is to understand the reactions, protect the people inside them, and help build systems strong enough to carry what comes next.
